• Who is Charles?

I have been an Internet reviewer, reviewing websites since June 2007.

Social media has been a phenomenon since 2007. It brings in the true two-way communication between the websites and their visitors. That's what Web 2.0 is all about. I aim to review what the world has become, and to give you my opinions and choices.

A Good Website Beats The Online Reviewer

By Charles On February 28, 2008 No Comments

If you have spent enough time doing up your website properly, you would have already won half the battle. The rest is up to your ability to bring in the traffic through joint ventures, search engine marketing, viral marketing, and other forms of advertising. A good website always forces a reviewer to focus on its solutions to its potential customers in the reviewer’s market. Whenever a reviewer has reviewed your website, he is actually doing a promotion of your website in one way or another.

Giving enough time to work out your website to give a clear message to your visitors, you are showing your visitors that you are really serious about your website. When you have enough time to take care of your visitors, your visitors will appreciate you very much. And as you get more and more busy with your customers, some times you might not have the time to take care of your other customers. And when that happens, it is as good as not spending enough time for your customers. The beauty of the Internet has taken care of it mostly through the usage of technology. Using email, we tend to have the time to queue up the enquiries and to take care of them one at a time. Using messaging tools such as MSN, Google Talk and Yahoo Messenger, we have the ability to do customer service to many people at the same time. It is such a wonderful business to do here.

A good website tends to control the online reviewer to do an introduction of your website to his market. It will turn out to be a winning strategy of the website to have an edge over the rest in terms of the website appearance, website message, and an effective visitor conversion.

On the other hand, if you have thought that your website has done a good job and you asked for a review which turns out to be a negative result, fret not because it is telling you where you have gone wrong and to do a better job the next time. Where things might go bad from time to time, something better will happen next if you are positive about it.

Reading To Be A Better Online Reviewer

By Charles On February 27, 2008 No Comments

While it is not a good idea to keep on doing reviews without improving myself, I do have a range of books which I love to read to catch up with other people’s thought of their lives. But to be an online reviewer, there are a few range of books which needs to be taken care of. It gives us a really good exercise mentally. In fact, reading is just like doing physical exercise. It keeps your mind fit just like keeping your body fit!

I have great interest in reading about motivational books. They can keep us up and running, giving us a good idea about being positive in life. And the first person in my mind is Anthony Robbins when I read his “Awakening the Giant Within”. Anthony Robbins always reminds me about measuring my pains and pleasure in life which causes me to do certain things. His books have made me feel, and act and think more maturely in life. In fact, a lot of things that happened on me have been occured because of my previous encounter with his books. Next, I thought of Stephen Covey who discusses about his 7 Habits Of Highly Effective People, and the 8th Habit. His books are a little too technical to understand where I get to see different diagrams, graphs and such. Then, I thought of Brian Tracy who has given me a lot of great ideas in a step-by-step basis… One thing I like about Brian Tracy’s books is that his books tend to let me understand things in a more systematic way.

Then, I also like to read sales books. Sales books from Brian Tracy are also fantastic as he gives me a very familiar way of reading his books. He gave titles to every paragraph in his books, giving me an easy way of glancing through some of things that I want to emphasize on. Brian Tracy’s sales books are more towards understanding people to do a better sales. I also love books from Tom Hopkins. He simply creates best sales books around. His books are all about closing any deals from anybody. Handling disagreements, and converting them into sales and even upsells.

Next, I love marketing books. Books from Jay Abraham and Seth Godin… Jay Abraham’s marketing is simply magical… Talking about creating something from nothing… Whereas Seth Godin speaks more about small is the new big, being different, and about marketing on the Internet and in blogs. Reading those books simply make me feel fantastic to work out something as soon as possible!

Lastly, I also like to read computer books… I used to read PHP and MySQL books… PHP is one of the simplest programming on earth to understand… And it even has object-oriented programming too… Understanding technical area makes you a better reviewer because a website is naturally done from computer programming and graphic design. Give yourself sometime to understand the mechanics of Apache, MySQL, PHP, HTML, CSS and Javascript will give you a good basis of the feel of the Internet.

One more before I end this post, I love to take photographs. There are so many things to play with though I don’t know much about the technical part of it. When I have a camera, I can take about 1000 photographs taking everything that I see!

A Brand New Day Of Concentration

By Charles On February 25, 2008 4 Comments

Finally, my focus is very clear. I am heading towards the Internet marketing world. I have got over with the sales job that I have been mentioning to you all along. I simply have a few things to focus right now.

  1. Spending more time with my girlfriend… I know that I have been to busy to accompany my dear girl… I want to give her the attention that she deserves.
  2. Fitness… Probably because of work and more work, I have also ignored my physics for quite a couple of months already.. All I need is a regular jog and swim…
  3. Internet Marketing industry… I have been working along this area since last year June… This is a good time for me to strive hard to make it through…
  4. My “Digital cleanliness” in my hard disk… All my video reviews… my articles… my ebooks… software.. and everything else… They need to be more organized for a better reference of education and work…
  5. My Room cleanliness… Every morning, I rush out to work… Every night, I rush home to work too… And I sleep right after… I am taking a short break to clean up the room for a better working environment…

Firstly, I would like to thank my girlfriend who has gotten a N95 phone with me. Yes, both of us have our very own Nokie N95 mobile phone each… This phone has made me more organized in my timing to go out and to work.. Everything is done with the reference of the organizer in this phone! Moreover, I have also used the camera to take many beautiful shots out there. I have also used it to surf the Internet to check out the latest blog posts from my favorite bloggers, checking emails, and making sure things are on track…

Secondly, I would like to thank my girlfriend who has been given me a lot of love and support… She is one lady whom I respect and to love her with everything that she deserves… Probably I may not have enough time for her which is making her so sad… But because she’s so full of me like this, that I love her even more!

Thirdly, I must thank my laptop who has been giving me all the power to create the Internet business today. This laptop has served me since 2003, and is still working fine… I am really happy to have bought this laptop all along… This laptop has accompanied me through the years of businesses I have gone through…

Fourthly, I must thank my boss who has given me the opportunity to work on sales for him in so many things. Just in the short period of four months, I have learned a lot of things about the IT industry which I have lost touch many years… Talking to the clients, and giving solutions based on my past knowledge has been really fun… Frankly speaking, ever since I know that I am going to leave the company, I felt a kind of relief inside me. I would rather leave at this right moment when I am not disappointing them…

I also like to thank my friends who have been giving me encouragement all along. My online friends like Alvin and Carl… My offline friends like Aaron and Richie… It has been great to know friends like them…

Different Websites Have Different Angles Of Doing Reviews.

By Charles On February 24, 2008 2 Comments

As I review more and more websites online, I realize that there are a lot of different types of website reviews. Some reviews require me to look technically at the website because it’s the technical area which is the niche of the website. Some reviews are simply expressing the concept of the website to the audience to understand. In other words, different websites have their different needs of setting the right angle to review a website.

I had just finished one review which I found it quite difficult to write. Well, it is not because his website is very complicated. In actual fact, he has a very simple website to review about. It is so straight to the point that I have almost nothing to talk about except to go according to what he wanted to tell the visitors. This is one review which I found the owner’s website is quite effective in presenting his website.

Different websites have different angles of reviewing.
Of course, I can find flaws in the reviews if I want to look at it from a different angle. But that will be unfair to the website owner since that is not his focus anyway. As a reviewer myself, I have to look positively at what he wants to offer to his readers as much as possible so that I can relate his expressions better.

On the other hand, there are times when the owner is unable to express his point of view better. So, that is where I will start pointing out to show my review readers what this website can do to improve his website. Afterall, this is a website review, right?

I remember when I just started out writing reviews, I happened to review one website quite negatively. The concept of his website is to talk about online marketing. But because his website wasn’t well done technically, I have actually exposed a lot of his flaws to the readers to see and to understand. That was quite an extreme case for me to review whereby it is not easy for me to look for positive angle. In that case where the website owner is unable to express the angle for me to write positively, I really have no choice but to apologize and to review from my point of view.

Website Owners Expressing their Niche As Accurate As Possible
A reviewer like myself is just like any other visitor to your website. As for me, I will just review as I browse through your website. I will also write my thoughts as much as possible. Of course, I wouldn’t want to write anything bad to anybody so long as you are putting your website together in the way that you want me to see it as. And if you didn’t put your heart and soul into this website, it is pretty obvious and will show in the review itself.

To tell the truth or not?
Sometimes, I am really being left on the spot of whether to tell the truth about how bad this website is, or not to tell. I will usually keep myself as positive as the website owner as they want to portray that image to the visitors. And if that angle of positiveness is unable to reveal the goodness of the website, I may try to say the “bad things” nicely… :)

Turning Your Mistake In Internet Marketing Into Niche

By Charles On February 22, 2008 No Comments

It sounds really terrible being mistaken in what you are doing. All the more, when you are doing an Internet business where Internet marketing is part of your everyday routine to bring in the traffic and eventually to make more money for your livelihood. Internet business can be disastrous when you have been mistaken for what you are doing. Being clear in your marketing campaign is a very important step. And to understand how people actually interpret your marketing message, you need to ask for opinions from people who first seen your website.

Sometimes, things just don’t go accordingly to the way you marketed your business. Sometimes, it turns out that a certain part of your business is prospering which you had least expected. You have to catch that mistake, and magnify it into your niche. Sometimes, being too clear about your marketing may not be the one that actually hit the market. Everything just takes place accordingly to make you a certain niche to work on.

Some Internet marketers managed to pull through after many tries. They could have done as many websites as 40 of them, and only one of them managed to hit the market. All you need is just one very good shot at your Internet marketing to make it into your successful home business.

Of course, that one shot does not make you rich instantly… You got to identify that shot, and magnify it exponentially by doing more marketing such as article marketing, forum marketing, pay-per-click advertising, viral marketing and many others.

Below is an interesting “Don’t think too much” Advertisements… Where people receive what you have perceived to them at that moment of “truth”… You got to find out where the misunderstanding is, and turn it into your niche. :)

Giving My Best At My Business

By Charles On February 22, 2008 3 Comments

It was a tough choice. I was going for my sales job as per normal. Probably because I have been juggling with job and business for a few months, I am probably going to break down anytime. Had a good chat with my boss about it. I had been wanting to give my best at both my job and business. Overloading with too many things, and having sleepless nights are some of things I have been tolerating for so long. In the end, I resigned and went into my own business still.

I believe you all know about it. Resigning a job without any backup is a real tough choice to make especially when your income is not stable. And to add that with my recent sudden expenses incurred because of a minor car accident mentioned in my thought about turning into full time internet marketer, and some of the daily expenses to take care of, it is never an easy choice to make. Focus is very important when you want to make it in life. The Secret has given me enough reasons to tell the world what I want to do.

Giving my best in my own business is the single most important thing in my life right now. Not only does it give a real fulfillment in my life, it also adds to my surrounding and influence them as well. First and foremost, I want to give my best to my wife-to-be and to provide her with the best that a life can give. Then, I want to build a family out and to enjoy quality life together… I think life is all about love and career. Don’t you think so?

Email Is An Important Communication Cum Marketing Tool.

By Charles On February 22, 2008 4 Comments

Many times, I see many email marketers in Singapore sending mass email to their subscribers and had accidentally revealed all the subscribers’ emails to one another. When that case happens, some of the subscribers tend to get very angry and start contacting the email marketers to complain. It has happened to me quite a few times already, with the most recent one just today. Some email marketers might even used spam to do some direct internet selling to the potential customers using the Internet.

This recently, I heard from Class 95FM radio that the IDA has set up a Spam Control especially for Singapore. Everyday, there are so many spams being done in Singapore… We have lots of fax spam, email spam, letterbox spam and even sms spam. Oh well, this Singapore Spam Control is probably tackling emails mainly. Even if it is so, I find it amusing when they have a funny part at FAQ about spams saying that if the consumer should complain if there is spam. And the answer is logical in advising the consumer that he can do that if the sender is trustworthy, otherwise just delete the spam when in doubt. Oh well, this is actually true… It is always better to delete than to reply. As for my case, I will usually forward all spams to spam@uce.gov. For more info about reporting spam, you can go to FTC Spam Home Page.

Many times, when I open my inbox to check for all the mails, I will expect at least 50% to be spams. In fact, the situation seems to get better and better now since I used to have about 80% spams in the past. I noticed most of the spams are more related to casino, pornography and fakes. The origin of the spams are already selling products which are not really feasible in the real marketing sense such as Pay-Per-Click in Google Adwords… And I guess Google wouldn’t allow such advertising on Google Ads… It’s no wonder they are marketing it this way…

If any of you are noticing a good product being marketed in the spam way, I guess you can only find it in most Asian countries with Singapore not being spared… I have seen many good products being marketed in the spam method. If only we have more creativity to do it in the right way…

What Do You Really Want As A Consumer?

By Charles On February 18, 2008 3 Comments

As a consumer, you tend to think that you are always at the advantage of asking prices everywhere just to get the cheapest product. Well, do you really get what you want in the end as an unfaithful consumer to the salespeople? There are many different types of consumers buying different products. And as salespeople ourselves, we tend to filter out those consumers who are only faithful to the cheapest price since we will never win their heart as our recurring sales. But to all those unfaithful consumers, do you think you have won?

Many times, we would think of asking for prices everywhere just to get the lowest price possible for that same product. So, we will walk and walk and walk, ask and ask and ask, compare and compare and compare, until we get the lowest price… Then, we will go to that shop to buy. This is a very common consumer who don’t really know the big picture of buying a product.

We all want to have quality in our lives. We tend to go for the best things in life. And usually, best things don’t come cheap. I have a sister who always goes for the best and cheapest things in life. Have she really won? Probably so in her expenses since she is able to buy more things in the end. However, because of the thought of looking for the best things in life with the cheapest price, she has wasted a lot of time finding them. No doubt she will be able to find them. But it seems to me that this way is not going to work because she has been compromising herself to get quality things in life.

I have a friend who simply goes into a computer shop, and asks for the cheapest printer with the fastest scanning and printing ability. In the end, he has left the experienced salesman to have a free play here. Why? First of all, he knows this guy is not going to buy from him the next time unless he can still provide quality service at a very cheap price. Secondly, anyway any printer should fit in since all he needs to look for is the cheapest printer in his shop. And usually, cheap products don’t really yield high profit margin. If the salesman has no other customers looking around, he wouldn’t mind just entertain my friend since he’s free. And if he found a better customer, he might just focus on that customer who is looking for the quality before he talks about cost.

As consumers, we should really look at the quality of the products before we talk about money. Once we have found out what’s the best product, we may start to talk about payment. Payment should be discussed separately from the actual product since they don’t mean the same thing; We wanted this product very much but we cannot afford it. Or, we can afford to buy this product, but this product is not wanted by us.

As a result, when we talk about writing sales copy for our customers, the focus should be on the product and not the money. Money should be left as a separate discussion wherever possible. And if money is really the only issue, the potential customer might want to have a try by signing up some email courses. In this way, it gives the customer an idea to find out before he decides to put in the money…

Photography Day At Sentosa Flowers 2008

By Charles On February 18, 2008 2 Comments

I am at Sentosa Flowers 2008 today. I had a good time taking photographs with my N95. And it is making me see how problematic it can be to take photographs with a camera phone even though it has 5 mega pixels. I saw so many flowers out there… They are so beautiful… I just have to stand very close to the flowers to take a very good snapshot of them. I realize flower admiration can be quite fun especially when I am going there to take photographs of those beautiful flowers…

It’s a beautiful Sunday at 5pm when we visited the Sentosa to admire the flowers. It was the last day for the public event known Sentosa Flowers 2008. We really like this event very much. I am now really interested in photography!

Here’s a candid picture of myself standing close to take picture of the flower.

Charles Lau taking a close shot at the flowers.

Well, I didn’t realize my sister is taking a photograph of me who is trying to take a good shot at the flowers. They are so beautiful… Please allow me to show you some of the flowers I have taken.

Ok, enough of admiring the flowers… Now, let’s look at me with the flowers.

Hey, these are real flowers!

Ok, thanks for watching the photographs. They are all taken from my Nokia N95 camera phone, except for one candid shot of me taking photographs.

Do You Have an Issue In Pricing Your Product or Service?

By Charles On February 17, 2008 4 Comments

A product has no actual value until you put a price to it. And when you have put a price to a product, it actually means two things to the potential customer. They are known as “interested” and “affordability“. When you have a product which interests a potential customer, it doesn’t mean that he will buy it. People really wanted to buy it only when they can afford to pay for the price that you have tagged for it. And the meaning of affordability has to do with the maximum amount of money he has in his savings, and the kind of value he thinks your product is over-priced or under-priced.

Definitely if you have under-priced a product, it could mean two things. Firstly, people might be interested to buy it since it is so much cheaper than other competitors and hence you have a business to do right now. Secondly, because you have under-priced your product, it could mean little or no profit on your side to carry on doing business to service the customers. And hence, the customers are actually doing a disservice to themselves if they are buying a product which is under-priced, especially when they need some after-sales warranty of the product. Cheap products seldom come with warranty since they can’t afford to bear any additional cost to do one-on-one exchange to keep the customer happy. But, they could do a charge for every any recurring customer to make back their cost.

For example, I bought a Dell laptop myself which I found it quite cheap with the specifications that I bought at that time in 2003. (Yes, it’s still working fine.) At that time, I have been wondering if I need a bluetooth module for my laptop. It’s only 1 day after my laptop has been delivered to me that I called Dell for assistance to buy the bluetooth module. They charged me at a price of about SGD$100 for it which is way too expensive to buy one. Of course, I believe they charged me at this price because they wouldn’t want to do this business since it’s just a very cheap little device that they can’t make much profit to provide me with the product. If only I bought it together with my laptop, it will cost less than $50… (I forgot the actual amount since it was an issue in 2003.)

Dell has been well-known for their low pricing of computers. But I heard that their after-sale service is the one that kills. They don’t have the full 3 years warranty unless you purchased an additional insurance for it. For many consumers out there, they might want to cut the price by not taking up the warranty. But it’s actually after 2 to 3 years that the computers start to fail. Hence, you can see that cheap things don’t come merciful after all.

Welcome to the world of paying more for better service and being more merciful. If you would want to price your product at a higher price, you better start to give more values which worth at least 100 times better than the high price that you have tagged. People always want to get better services. But after they have satisfied their wishes, it voices down to the maximum amount of money they have saved… If one potential customer’s bank account has only $500, and you are trying to convince him to pay $1000, you are actually putting him on a spot of lending money or to pay by installments. But of course, they wouldn’t mind to exceed their limit if your values have overwhelmed the price that you have tagged. Let’s just imagine selling a BMW 5 Series to him for only $1000… In his mind, he will be all confused and may do any ridiculous things just to get your product. (This example is just an extreme case to understand what I am trying to relate.)

In the world of online sales where you don’t get a chance to explain your product’s value to the customer verbally, people would usually add values to the product by providing additional products and/or services as bonuses to allow the customers to compare the value and to pay for the price. The only chance you can explain your product’s value is your sales copy on the website. This is so important because it is the way to do duplication of sales in a more efficient way. Just imagine the old conventional way of doing quotations for every single request from potential customers… And in the end, only 20% or less of the quotations get to close while you have spent too much time working on all of them…

Being consistent in learning about writing sales copy is a very important step to every internet marketer. Just like a direct sales personnel… We all have to consistently learn how to do online sales because today’s sales skill doesn’t really apply to tomorrow’s market… Hence, a pricing strategy is very important over here. It really depends on selling low-priced items or high-priced items, to determine which strategy to adopt…
