Charles Is Busy Outsourcing And Leveraging
After reading through Mike Filsaime’s The 7 Figure Secrets book, I have decided to do something about my work. First of all, I am getting myself busy working on the most important area of my reviews. I want to outsource the design work to the experts who are in the better position to talk about my website. I have been trying to work everything on my own for quite a while, and I just find myself taking too much time working on something which is not productive. I am in the midst of talking to a creative director whom I am appreciative of his effort in guiding me along. He is literally telling me that I am on the right track to outsource my web design. I am thankful for his proactiveness in engaging me along in our conversation. If the whole process goes very well, I will recommend him to all of you shortly. I have just got myself involved with Yaro Starak’s blog mastermind coaching which is launched only about 2 hours ago. And I am pleased to get his fast action bonuses. I believe I can learn a lot from this guy as I read some of his very well-written articles in his own blog which got me engaged in his work from time to time. I am also starting to learn more about Joomla CMS after purchasing some tutorial videos from DealDotCom. I wouldn’t say the videos are very well-done, but I wouldn’t comment too much about it since I am still at the starting phase of it. This would be useful for me to work on my corporate website as well as affiliate websites. Also from DealDotCom, I purchased Web 2.0 Covers Package where it comprises of a lot of very well-done Web 2.0 ebook covers and CDs. Not too bad to work out for the upcoming plans of Charles Lau dot Com. I also got Norman Freeman’s Viral Inviter to work with. Wonder if it works very well with the sites or not, but it sure does create more effective viral marketing with a smooth transaction. Next, I also got an Aweber account! This is for me to work out all my email marketing campaigns. I finally convinced myself that this is what I should get to build relationships with my readers. By the way, I saw Mike Filsaime’s Review Crusher. It may be a good program, but I just can’t feel the urge to get one at all. Anyone? Last but not least, I am still thinking whether I should port over to Media Temple for my hosting needs. I faced one or two hiccups with Bluehost in almost every month. Things such as the MySQL server is down, Web Server is down, or hard disk is low, or even the whole server is down! Looks like Media Temple is quite stable though I have seen one hiccup before from my friend. I am still busy trying to outsource as much things as I can, while focusing on writing reviews and giving my own opinions about other websites and their products/services. |

Career Theory Our Parents Never Taught Us When We Were Young
I had a thought recently about choosing the right career paths this recently. Please pardon me if I am wrong. Whenever we are seeing anybody who has no money and probably begging for it, something came to my mind. I asked myself “Why are you begging/asking for money?” And this person probably would give me a lot of reasons why. Things such as “We have a huge medical fee to pay and our salary couldn’t support.”, “We have no jobs”, “We are not able to work…”, etc.
Money is the most general reason for all careers that we are striving for. We have been studying really hard to produce more values in order to make more money in future. And it has always been quite common to hear most parents saying that “Study hard, so that you can get a good job.” No doubt about that as our parents only know how to make money by working in a job. It doesn’t really matter in the end whether we are working in a job, or to build a business. So long as there’s money to be made, there is something we can look out for. But there’s a slight difference when we are talking about how much value we can create within our career… Thing about it… If we are able to create a value with our both hands and our both legs, there’s only so much we can do with our hands and legs. Our hands and legs are the actual mechanism to bring results in this world. But the most powerful value creator is actually from our brain… We are actually using our brain to think of a lot of things that we can do… But there is only so much we can do with our hands and legs… Add that limit with the total amount of lifespan we can invest in this beautiful earth… And that is why, we must fully utilize our hands and legs to do only the most profitable things that our brain has instructed. For those jobs/businesses which require them to work in the job, such as selling a product directly to a consumer, producing the product by yourself in order to make money, handling all the paperwork that you have, doing the design work for your marketing materials, etc… All these things are taking up a lot of time from the person… So much so that this person can only create a limited amount of value… And that’s why they are only paid for the time they had invested in. Just imagine being able to outsource your work in one way or another, taking the most critical role of making decisions in moving your career forward, doing the sort of work which requires your involvement and not those which can easily be done by computer in automating the jobs… You would have effectively created a lot more value… And thus, you deserve to make more money since your company had been profusely profited from it. Employees who are not caring about creating more values It is easily said that the company is employing you for $500 per month, and wishes you to help the company make $5000 per month directly or indirectly. And if you are able to help the company make $50k per month, you can easily ask for a pay raise which you deserved it all. Study hard, and get a good paying job Do what you like, like what you do |

Confusing Interruption Marketing with Permission Marketing?
If somebody tells you that permission marketing means to send mass advertorial email to everybody, and have an opt-out link at the bottom, how would you react? I was totally shocked to hear that today from someone who is fluent in offline marketing. If spamming with an opt-out link is permission marketing, we should be sending out emails to everybody we know and let them know “By the way, you can opt-out by clicking on this link.” Obviously, it is quite a common thought amongst many Singapore companies (both big and small are affected.) that reaching out to as many people as we can is the way of doing business. Even if it’s only a 1% response, it means good to them already! And they will think this is a good measure of “spamming” more people. My God, when will these people wake up to understand permission marketing?
Permission marketing always comes with an incentive for your potential customer. She couldn’t believe that to be the standard, and thought that this is just one of the many marketing strategies. For sure, it is so in one way or another. However, we still have to work out an incentive to look for the correct market who is interested in our business. How many kinds of permission marketing can we find in this world other than what Seth Godin has defined for us? I personally feel that Seth Godin has defined it well to live up to his name as a very powerful internet marketer. Well, the truth of permission marketing is that we are building a very powerful list for ourselves. The conversion rate can be as high as 80% if you have done a good job over the years. Why would we want to spend so much money to maintain a huge database with so little conversion as 1%? Now, we can understand why there are so many internet millionaires born every now and then. The maintenance of building a list is much lower, and the profit from converting the list is so high! It is equivalent to opening an MNC who can spend millions of dollars to profit only tens of thousands of dollars (1% profit?). These many MNCs have made many of us think that we must have a lot of money to make a lot of money…. Seth Godin, your Permission Marketing book should have open the eyes of the marketers now… |

Singapore Companies Are Coming Into Web 2.0 Finally
Singapore companies are finally awakening to the presence and power of the Internet. It is not easy for Singaporean companies to step into this realm because of the Internet bubble burst which had burnt a lot of the Singaporean investors. These few days, I have been hearing everything about Web 2.0 from the presentations of the web content management system companies. All thanks to them that I have a feel that the Singapore companies are going social media finally. Most of these web content management system companies are now only having an average office size of 10. That’s to say that they have an estimated monthly expenses of $30k. Their solution is costing an average of $100k. Which probably means that they are closing deals at the rate of probably 3 big companies per year. Having about 5 such web content management system companies in Singapore, they are probably closing at the rate of 15 companies per year. With a rough gauge of 15 companies in Singapore buying Web 2.0 solutions, it is very likely that I would start to see more and more corporate companies involving in blogging, wikis, mashup applications and into social media. And because many companies around the world like to use Singapore as their headquarter for certain countries in Asia, it will mean these 15 companies are most likely deploying throughout in the region. As an Internet Reviewer, I don’t believe any small company will deploy a six figure investment on the Internet. That’s because these companies still believe a lot in their traditional marketing techniques. And even if they can cough up six figures, they will want to spend it more on advertisement in radio, TV or newspapers. What can we do? Most Singapore companies believe a lot in exposing themselves to as many eyeballs as they can. No matter who they are, they will want to spend the money to make more impressions. They do understand the meaning of reach and frequency. Whether they can reach out to as many eyeballs as they can, or to make as many sequential advertisements as they can for frequency purpose. They might face some issues when using the same knowledge on the Internet… It is absolutely not impossible to spend six figures on the Internet advertisement if you want to go for anonymous reach and frequency (like TV, Radio and Newspapers). But it is even more feasible to spend five figures on targeted reach and frequency with similar results or even better! I will continue to observe these web content mangement companies’ growth… They should be the determinant for the readiness of Web 2.0 companies. |

Apple, You Have Done Yourself A Disfavor
I don’t like the way Apple has tried to upsell their Safari in this manner. It is too intruding and having no permission to ask us in this manner. What did they do actually? I was being alerted today that my iTunes has a new version to update. So, I went ahead and click to update it. It popped up a new window to show me the usual update window to carry on with the update. It was so smooth transaction that I was already clicking down on “Install 2 items”. That stopped me from releasing the click. I pulled back.
Let me tell you that I stopped myself from continuing to click on that “Install 2 items” because I don’t want to install QuickTime! A closer look at the update, I have no choice to download iTunes only… QuickTime is a must! An even closer look… I was about to install Safari browser which I didn’t ask for… Now, that is about INTRUDING my computer! Sorry that I am happy with my Mozilla Firefox 3.0 and I don’t wish to use Microsoft Internet Explorer or even Opera browser! Is Apple trying to do this to increase their market share in the web browsers world? No doubt that I like their browser on IPhone and on IMac… But on PC, I prefer Firefox for my daily Internet dosage… Sorry, no entry over here! In fact, this was already an issue when I checking out their wikipedia. They have an external reference to CNet webware reporting this apple software update issue already. At that time when CNet reports the same issue, it was even worse when Apple Software Update is showing the two items together. Check out the CNet website for that screenshot. If you want to upsell, please upsell! Don’t assume! The famous McDonald example would be “Would you like to have an apple pie with your meal?” Apple’s such action is like mimicking a McDonald staff to say “Here’s an apple pie on top of your meal. The total cost would be $10. Ok to pay now?” |

30 Useful Applications For Your S60 3rd Edition Symbian Mobile Phones
When I first got my N95, I realize this is almost all I need. For sure, I still feel IPhone may do better than my phone. But, this N95 has been serving me well in the different parts of my life. I am utilizing it as much as I can so that I can live by my N95. With so many applications available for N95 and its capability to surf wirelessly, it has been useful for me to think beyond what this phone can help me. I have been playing with a lot of applications with my N95 in this area. They can range from setting up a server, to using web client programs. We’ll see the following: PAMP: This is a personal web server on your mobile phone where you get to run PHP and MySQL directly. Although I seldom play with this, it looks really cool to have such an application on my mobile phone. I ever tried to work out a php script to upload file to my mobile phone easily, but it didn’t work out and I didn’t bother to try further after 2 hours. (Free) SymSMB: This is where I shared my files and folders between the computers and my phone, through the wireless network. It is so simple to use that I use it to share folders and send files instantly over the network without caring if they have any bluetooth module on their laptops. (USD$48) WWIGO: This is where I used my mobile phone as a webcam for my laptop. Very cool to have, and it is easy extension from your laptop to set it up. But you must have bluetooth on your laptop in order to connect. Within a short distance, I can bring the camera phone to everywhere to let my MSN friends to see. (Free) QIK: You may or may not like this. But this is a live camera to be broadcast to the web when you have an access to the Internet with your mobile phone. I tried to use this to show what I am eating at a restaurant, and it looks pretty good with a combination of “YouTube” and “live!”. (Free) Fring: I have this application to keep me in touch with my MSN friends, Twitter updates, Skype, and more. They seem to keep on adding new applications to it, so I can chat all I want over my phone. And you know, mobile phone messaging is not really hard anyway. Especially when I am used to the keypads. (Free) Twibble: A standalone twitter application where I get live feed from the twitter server. And while receiving twitter messages, I can also send twitter updates of what I am doing right now. Really cool application to use because this is really easy to use where you can even follow a friend. (Free) Wavelog: This program allows me to blog on my Charles Lau dot Com. It is compatible with WordPress (as well as Drupal, Joomla and Movable Type), and allows you to do quite a lot of formats in your blog. The only thing I don’t like is that it looks quite beta version when I am using it. Though it is flexible, it doesn’t feel good to play with it. Anybody knows any alternative? (USD$10) MobiTubia: This is probably the best YouTube application on N95 to watch videos. Very user-friendly and easy to understand. Feels pretty good to play with it. I just don’t like the way they brand this program. It looks pretty “childish”. Nevertheless, it is a must-use application. Pretty similar to emTube actually. But MobiTubia is highly recommended by me. I heard the developer has won some prize for this app. (Free) Opera Mini: This is a browser for N95. It doesn’t really take over the default browser used by N95. It is more like complimenting it only. Opera Mini is able to browse websites more heavily than the default browser. And it is less likely to encounter any “memory-overflow” problem like the default browser. Easier to browse with Opera mini. One time I encountered some problem and I lost all the bookmarks. Probably it was my fault actually. I have forgotten what I have done with opera. However, it is recommended. (Free) Yahoo! Go: This is like a “all-in-one” for your Internet usage on your N95. I get to use my Flickr account here, check my Yahoo email (which I only use it for my yahoo needs. So quite useless), check your stock quotes, portfolios, latest headlines and all the news and contents. This thing works pretty well on my mobile phone, but I just feel it is quite lagging to use as it feels to me that it is a very heavy application. (Free) Upvise: This program works a little like Yahoo! Go. Although Yahoo! Go has more defined information to work with than Upvise, I feel Upvise is a much better application with better performance. This program is especially useful if you need instant access to Wikipedia. Upvise not only provides information from Wikipedia, it also provides RSS news, Quote of the Day and much more. (Free) Gmail: This is useful to check my mails, especially when I have synchornized all my external mails through Gmail. Easy to see as they have re-structured the contents suitable for mobile view automatically. I just don’t like the initial startup which takes so long to open Gmail program. Internet Radio: This is actually part of N95 phone default applications. I have used this to listen to Webmaster Radio dot FM, and more. Pretty good to use. I was trying Virtual Radio, and it is not as good even. (Part of N95) SIC! FTP: Do you need FTP client program to upload anything to your server? I have a very capable phone where I have 8GB memory, wireless-enabled, and it works like a computer. without a FTP program will be a waste. There is an English-language version of the website, just look for the country flag inside. (Free) Handy Safe: There are so many user-ids and passwords to remember in this world. Without a useful passport program to manage, you may have a lot of same user-ids and passwords which can lead to a human security loophole for yourself. (USD$49.95) Handy Expense: I have this program to keep track of my credit card expenses, my travel expenses and how much money to return and such. Pretty useful application to work out with. i used this and found how much I have spent on various things. Great to have an analysis of my expenses. (USD$14.95) Handy Converter: This program is great for providing conversions in many forms such as currency, exchange, rates, clothes, length, weight, area, volume, speed and temperature. It is especially useful to convert from one currency to 3 other currencies instantly. And it provides free updates of currency rates as well. I used this during my travel in other countries. (USD$14.95) Handy Calculator: I used this program to do my calculation with ease as it provides direct button access to the various functions. Easy to use. (USD$9.95) Handy Clock: This handy clock is able to track many countries’ time and dates. Easy to see calendar. Many clock alarms if you need. Timer to take. Stopwatch if you need. And a time log. it is really useful and I have used it as my alarm clock replacement from the usual N95 clock. (USD$24.95) Handy Calendar: This handy calendar is using the same platform as N95’s calendar. And it has much more functionality to take advantage of as well. Really good for the time management in my work today. (USD$39.95) Projekt: This is a must-have to manage your projects where you need to do mind-mapping. It provides a very comprehensive hierarchy for your work, and yet the usage is as simple as ABC. (USD$29.95) MobiReader: Free program to convert your PDF and document files into much more readable format on the phone. They make their money by providing contents where you might be interested to buy from. (Free) SMS Scheduler: This program is great for setting a certain date and time to send your sms to someone in your mobile phone. Very useful program when you need to send a certain sms reminder. It may be used as a kind of “mass-sms” to your friends at a certain timing. Sometimes buggy, but it works well. (USD$20) FlipSilent: When you have a ring on your phone, simply flip the phone to silent it. This works pretty well if you know how. However, it can be somehow not working from time to time. (Free) rotateMe: This is good for rotating the phone according to the landscape view, or portrait view. However, it is not so well-done in my opinion. Can be useful if you know how to make it work exactly. (Free) Handy Profiles: This is useful for setting the profile only at certain timing of the day. It will do its automatic setting according to the rules that you set. (USD$19.95) Advanced Call Manager: This is useful for handling incoming calls in various ways. You can even receive voice message, send auto-sms reply, and having certain call handling at certain timing. (USD$25.50) Advanced Device Locks Professional Edition: This program comes into my mind when I complained to Handango about the password program done by SplashData which doesn’t allow me to lock my password program! This Advanced Device Locks comes into play to help me to lock certain applications by password access so that I can have rest on certain applications being secured in case. It also allows remote locking where I can’t access my phone. (USD$30.50) Handy Taskman: This is a useful program to manage all my tasks. Initially, I thought this is redundant until I see that I can “kill” applications which are dead inside my phone. It also shows the health of my phone for my memory usage and my “hard disk” usage as well. Must have for advanced users. (USD$24.95) Phone Alone: I left my phone at home. I need a quick access to my phone for my contacts, receiving voice messages and such… This is a pretty useful program where I can access it via any phone that I set to. (USD$19.95) I have finally put up as many applications on my N95 as possible now. Enjoy! Here’s an interesting video from Google about how to use your mobile phone! Have fun! |

Who Knows How To Market A Lousy Product?
It has brought into my attention when I see and hear the offline marketing experts are all talking about creating a story for their lousy products. That’s because they all think that I am lousy at marketing lousy products, which I feel it is true. To them, it is an art to understand how to market a lousy product to become a “good” product. Well, is that really what we want in life? I wouldn’t want to buy a lousy product.
And it turns out that amongst the marketing executives and managers, there seems to have two types of persons: Firstly, you are good at “lying” to make your lousy product look good. Secondly, you are good at telling the truth about what is good with this product. This actually reflects a lot in the person when I see how they market their products. Some marketers are not very motivated when they feel/know that their competitors have a better products than they do. These are the truth tellers in the marketing industry.
Firstly, we have the liars who lie through the teeth and may even divulge some benefits which the customers are not going to enjoy anyway. These are the ones who don’t really care about their customers, and they just want to do anything for money in return. I don’t think this kind of marketers are going to last in the Internet. They do work in the offline marketing where they can spend millions of dollars to create an awareness which doesn’t justify their messags. An infamous example comes from Ribena where there are a lot of misleads and false claims from Ribena. If there is no Internet to assist the consumers to be united to find out more about the companies who lied through their marketing, more and more consumers will just pour money into their pockets and left unsatisfied while the companies may even be trained to deal with all the unsatisfied consumers. Secondly, we have the liars who know how to tweak with their words and providing disclaimers for thei messages. This is like telling us what they are providing on the front, while having fine prints that they are not providing those quality. This is such a common practice amongst the offline marketers that they are now trying to bring the same techniques into the Internet world. There is definitely no doubt about the different effectiveness amongst the various kinds of mass media we are dealing with today.
Tweaking the advertisements to make the products look good is definitely an art. The whole idea is not to have any misrepresentation in the products’ benefits to the consumers. With today’s Internet existence, the tweaking skills just got even greater difficulties because of the unite of the consumers in websites such as the Planet Feedback. Ultimately if the product is really very lousy, sometimes it may be good to move on with an even better product. Products of average performance can be promised with a good customer service and a good marketing strategy. Alas, a product without a good marketing strategy and a good customer service are not going to be very effective… |

Internet Marketing Is Not About Number Game
I was hearing from the marketing companies (especially in Singapore) that internet marketing is not as effective as the usual TV advertising or even Radio advertising. They talk about eyeballs (in internet terms, it is known as “Impressions”). They talk about being measurable in terms of frequency and reach, which I personally feel it is such a waste of money. Well, it has become a common debate between me and a physical marketing expert who don’t understand about Internet. She has been telling me great stuff about putting up an advertisement. It is in the world she has been exposed to, which are spending millions of dollars over there. Putting up a very big banner in the train station can cost a lot of money on a monthly basis. Sometimes, when there is nobody advertising, they will usually allow the last advertiser to continue putting up the ad there so that it doesn’t look empty. In other words, it become a free advertisement. And by the way, this kind of ad is very expensive and they have to put it on a consistent basis or else it wouldn’t work.
It is until she can understand the difference between permission marketing and interruption marketing which she is still trying to understand the difference. It is not easy for sure… It is like convincing me that TV advertisement works better than Internet advertising… And I am actually very skeptical about TV advertising myself… Actually… It is very simple to understand. $250,000 value of TV Advertisement => 1,000,000 Impressions => 100,000 find out more => 10,000 bought $10,000 Internet Advertisement => 500,000 Impressions => 5000 clicks => 500 bought Look at it very carefully… 10,000 TV customers = $250,000 500 Internet customers = $10,000 And what’s not covered yet? And then? |

Another Way of Naming A Domain To Represent Your Affiliate Link
This recently, I seem to be always learning something from Mike Filsaime in his internet marketing strategy. Previously, I have mentioned to you guys about buying a domain name to represent your affiliate link where we saw his affiliate link as http://quickyprofits.com/ while Jeff Mulligan – the real owner – is using http://quickieprofits.com/. This time round, it is a affiliate domain spoofing as the real website! This time round, I found this affiliate spoof domain at his Marketing Product Review pdf which looked like this:
Did you notice that the url is www-viralinviter.com? When I check the whois information, it looks like this:
Another way of learning how to name our affiliate links… The whole idea was meant to be good definitely. Mike Filsaime is an affiliate, promoting this fantastic product to all of us. In fact, I have bought this viral inviter myself from Mike Filsaime. But of course, we must always remember of not making a mis-representation of the seller to the potential buyers. That’s because if the affiliate has made a misrepresentation, and this caused the reputation of the seller, it may not be a good thing. And in Mike Filsaime’s case, he has made it clear that this marketing review is purely driven by affiliate sales in order to sustain the business. It sounds good to me. And he has made an effort of buying a domain just for the seller. And by the way, I have subscribed to Mike Filsaime’s new magazine. They are quite interesting to read. But… I think he has sent me two copies in separate envelopes by accident… Please remember not to over-charge me for the error!

I have been having debates with someone who has no knowledge about internet marketing and yet she has a lot of her “theories” about how internet marketing works. She is definitely influential and good in her offline marketing world.
My first impression was to install iTunes and QuickTime at the same time. That makes it 2 items. But because I was also previously been alerted to download the latest version of Quicktime when I was surfing. So I had already installed that.
There seems to have a flaw in marketing today. Everybody is trying to “bluff” one another about the quality of their products. Where a certain quality may not exist or is faring badly in the product features, this is an “art” of marketing the product to be more acceptable through the kind of messages they are presenting to the world.
For those marketers who are good at “lying”, there seems to have two types of liars.
They can be so effective that they know about the consistent exposure on the mass media which can create some effect to the people around the world. It can cause them to remember the companies. It can cause them to think of them whenever they need solutions. It can even cause them to buy from the companies when the time is riped.
When I talk to her about Internet marketing, she is very skeptical about it. She is wondering what is so good about it. I am not surprised after all. Though I don’t have the energy to explain to her what it is, I just hope she will start to understand over the period of working with me on the online marketing campaigns and a series of websites. She has been telling me things like “There are now so many websites out there, how do you stand out from the rest?” If she is looking from this angle, she is absolutely right! In the offline industry, there are already so many advertisements out there… So how do you stand out too?
