3 reasons why you should be glad that people are not following you on Twitter?

by Charles on 16 September 2009

It is a joy that people are following us as we progress with our tweets, connecting with different kinds of people around the world!  However, there are bound to have people who are unfollowing you along the way.  Sometimes, it could be because of a certain tweet that you have said which caused the followers to drop in numbers.  However, if you can withstand the test of time, your twitter followers will tend to increase along the way.

1. People are not interested in you

It is obvious that some of them are following you because you gave them a very good first impression.  They see your twitter followers, your tweets, and your profile.  If you are some famous person, it is quite obvious that your followers are most likely going to stick to you for as long as you can.  If you are not famous like myself, it’s your quality of tweets that is going to shine over time.  As time goes by, people may get bored over the tweets that you are telling them.  They may not want to follow you anymore simply because they are not interested in you.  If they are not interested in you, you should be glad that you are bringing in quality followers who are genuinely interested in you.

2. People are not interested in your passion

While you might have won their heart to follow you because of your recent tweets and your profile, they are interested in other passions after all!  You are better off to attract people who are really interested in your passion!  Let’s just face this fact! People like certain things more than others.  That’s why we tend to see a well distribution of students studying different courses in the same school… We also tend to see people of the same education looking for different types of jobs…

3. People are not really ready for twitter after all

As time goes by, we tend to see many twitter accounts being left behind.  According to some stats I have seen in the recent months, about 60 to 70% of the twitter accounts are not very active.  As such, the average number of followers that they usually have is probably up 100 to 200 in maximum.  And you would probably see no tweets from them… Or maybe just 1 or 2.

They probably have gotten this Twitter account because of the hype.  Or probably because their favorite characters are on Twitter.  Or probably because they want to learn how to start their social media activities one step at a time after reading @chrisbrogan‘s Trust Agent (available at Amazon!).

Seriously speaking, it is not easy to start twitter for the newbies.  I have tried to ask a few twitter friends to start theirs… It seems so hard for them to reach the momentum.

People who are ready in Twitter will respond to you!

It’s only this 30% of the twitter accounts (i.e. proudly to say it’s myself @CharlesLau and some of my best twitter friends @lizstrauss@mistygirlph, @bkmacdaddy, @phaoloo, @featureBlend, @clementyeung and @qutequte whom I would recommend you to follow!) which would respond in almost anything that you tell them about.  They respond to you for several reasons.  One, it’s their business in the social media.  Two, they love social media and hence they would love to help you! And how much would that cost?  Priceless.

Just now, @mistygirlph has just mentioned to me that she is just a twitterholic!  Probably that’s the reason for her 28000 tweets!

Conclusion

You are really who you tweet.  Your tweets will determine whether your followers should continue to follow you or not.  It takes a lot of test trials on my part and I am still learning too.  From my experience, if you see the number of followers coming down slowly, it probably means that they are not interested in you.  But if you see drastic drop in followers, it can be because you have offended them in one way or another.  For people who enjoyed a huge spike of followers through various advertising means (being featured, being blogged, or being a sponsor), a huge drop is probably a norm since a lot of them are just not interested in you after following you.

P/S: While you are here, you might want to take part in my contest to give away 5 accounts of Producteev for free!  I will be closing the contest soon.

  • Thanks Charles, I like reading this post. Looking for more post in the future to read
  • Yep, you are right on #1 and #2 Charles! I think one of the problems is that people are following without checking out Bios first (I am guilty of this).

I am already following @Phaoloo (great tweets altho I don't get to catch his tweets LIVE often) and I just followed @BkMacDaddy! I am also consoled I am not the most talkative (was worried I was being an irritant), and I am happy when people respond, even if it is to a silly quote I tweet!

Twitter is so simple to use, unlike Facebook, there's nothing much else to really distract you (other than the DMs)! Simplicity is Twitter's advantage.

THANK YOU for blogging abt this and for the shoutout Charles! You rock!
  • Thank you Charles for the mention.. I truly enjoyed reading this post and you are so correct with your points. As I always mention and I truly believe that its really not the number of followers that matter its the quality and the sharing that matters, at least for me that holds very true. I do tweet a lot cause I enjoy sharing, I like interacting and one more reason that i have so many updates is that I do varying tweets. I acknowledge that i do have a variety of followers who likes different information, or some like the music i tweet and some just like the fun stuff i share, others even ask or help.. I guess I am one lucky girl to have such awesome followers who like to chat or share when I am around. Twitter is fun, once people get the hang of it! :) Thank you for such an insightful post! Well done!
