It is always advisable for any one of you to have a domain name simply because of branding.  Having a common name consistently in the social media is a necessary step so that your social media users will be able to identify you wherever you go.

The start of a new case study

I decided to start a new web presence about Android phone tips since I have just bought myself a HTC Desire.

Tools used:

1. Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Android-Phone-Tips/140369539324334)
2. Twitter account (http://twitter.com/androidphonetip)
3. Tumblr (http://androidphonetips.tumblr.com/)

This is a case study that I will use to understand myself how a website can operate without a domain name of its own.  I will want to see how far this android phone tips can go, and to see how much value it will bring to the world of Internet.

Different brand names

In this case study, you will notice that I have not consistently put in the same branding. i.e. “Android Phone Tips”.  Instead, it has 2 different brand names of their own.  One very obvious reason is that I have not been able to get the same consistency name across the three platforms.  Twitter cannot take in the whole name as “AndroidPhoneTips” because there is character limit.

Ok, let me talk about something not related to Internet for a while.  This can be considered as a motivation post… Or just an opinion of mine… You decide!

There are a couple of times when we find someone always looking for problems… In a scenario where we are deciding on planning out an event, we will find this particular problematic person who always tells us all sorts of problems… He can tell us how “problematic” the whole situation is that it sounds very impossible to start this event.  When that moment comes, we find that this person is really irritating.  All we really need is a solution-oriented person…

So what makes up a solution-oriented person?

Whenever there is a question in his head or from somebody’s mouth, this person will try and think of various ways to solve that by saying out a solution.  It gives everybody a break since it’s telling the whole world that we can finally move on instead of dwelling on the hurdles.. Being a solution-oriented person, it gives a person an invisible positive energy that can keep going on and on… I simply have this kind of feeling in me!

All you need to do, is to be very genuine and sincere in your solutions.  Be very focused on the issues, and not against anybody in particular.  It gives a very good momentum for yourself, and to everyone who will start to like you!

But, everything comes with problems…

There are times when we really need to look out for problems so that we can create an even better environment.  And it can be really problematic if we have no problems to solve… Sometimes, I just like to hear from someone who has a bag of problems for me to solve so that we can do a better job!  :)

It really gives me a lot of insights to play with so that I can create a better scenario with better solutions!

You got to have a good mix of problems and solutions

What this is telling me is that being a solution-oriented person can only be this good… But if you can be “problematic” and to solve all those problems, you can even soar higher!

Hence, this is what I have derived:

Good = solutions

Better = solutions + (a few problems x solutions)

Best = solutions + (a lot of problems x solutions)

I watched “The Secret” movie quite some time ago. This movie came into my mind when I was talking to a friend who is not quite positive towards life. I was thinking that this could be a good time to move forward, and look into a “big picture” of what you want to do in 2010… And it will help to shape your path in both your career and in your personal life!

I will think about mine and set it in my next blog post if they are not so personal!

I was thinking again… Can I just activate my password via their website then?

With the use of the Internet with more and more usage of advanced computers, more and more companies are already cutting down on printing papers for their paperwork.  We can use computers more efficiently since the Internet has connected all our computers together.  Paperwork can be authorized through the Internet.  Fraud can always be there whether you are using computer or paperwork.  It’s all about the effort to make things easier and faster.

Even though I do hear this word “environmental friendly” many times everywhere, there are still a lot of places where papers are more preferred, such as the following:

1) photographs versus digital pictures
2) book organizer versus personal digital assistant (PDA)
3) “signing on contracts” versus “clicking on a button to agree on the website”
4) fax versus email
5) book versus ebook
6) “reading from the monitor”  versus “printing out and read”

I’m actually glad to see the new generations are now moving into digital world where there’s no need to print it out and read.  All the information can just be stored in a hard disk, instead of carrying heavy books around.  Just hope to see more efforts done…

What’s Care To Give?

It’s an online campaign aimed at helping underprivileged children in Singapore, and a genuine attempt by Nikon to give back something more to society. The elected charity will be the Singapore Children’s Society. For every new person who signs-up for an account at www.myPicturetown.com through the “Care To Give” portal, Nikon will donate $1 to the Singapore Children’s Society.

Who is Singapore Children’s Society?

Singapore Children’s Society aims to bring relief and happiness to children in need.  They want to be a leading edge organisation in promoting the well-being of the child.

They help protect and nurture children and youth of all races and religions, especially those who are abused, neglected, and/or from dysfunctional families via the  following six service categories:

1) Care Giving:  They take care of children and youth on behalf of their parents/ guardians for a period of time

2) Preventive:  They help prevent children and youth from being harmed or becoming at risk of delinquency, abuse and/or neglect.

3) Developmental:  They help educate and develop children and youth to become healthy and well rounded.

4) Remedial:  They provide rehabilitative services and medical subsidies to children and youth, with guidance and counseling for their families.

5) Community:  They promote the welfare of children and youth through the fostering of happy family life.

6) Public Education:  They conduct research related to children, youth and family to raise public awareness.

Nikon founded my Picturetown 

By donating $1 for every sign-up in my Picturetown, Nikon not only hopes to increase their number of subscribers, but also to raises awareness of the Singapore Children’s  Society. 

It looks to me that my  Picturetown has just launched not long ago, and Nikon is working hard to get it into the Web 2.0 world.

When I subscribe and have a look at the interface, I was  wondering what this website differs from its competitors.  I started to upload a photo.

Here’s how  it looks like when I am uploading:

Photos are shared via email in their interface.

Some of the other features such as adding to an album.   And they are also supporting third party sites and applications which connect to my Picturetown.

Conclusion

Personally, I find it meaningful that Nikon is using the money to donate to charity while attempting to increase their market share in the photo sharing industry.  It is definitely a win-win situation here, while the money will be used for charity and Nikon can increase their number of sign-ups in their photo sharing portal.

There are two things to note in this blog post.  One is the charity campaign which Nikon is working on to increase the awareness of the Singapore Children’s Society.  Another is to work on increasing their number of subscribers in my Picturetown.

1) Singapore Children’s Society reaches out to about 15,000 children, youths and families in need through their 9 service centres.  They proactively ensures that they are at the forefront to serve the needs of the children.  It is managed by an elected executive committee, who are volunteers and come from diverse backgrounds such as education, law, healthcare, business and more. It employs about 120 staff. They were awarded with two major Awards (Asia Pacic NGO Award and NVPC Best Non-Profit Organisation Award) in 2004.

2) my Picturetown has a similar characteristic as twitter here.  Twitter provides the very basic feature which is the engine that allows tweeters like us to broadcast our voices.  There are so many twitter applications out there which are supporting this, extending to many meaningful features out of it!  As for my Picturetown, it is currently providing a tool for us to upload and to share via email and static urls to share on social networks.  I don’t see any web badges for us bloggers to put up, or any RSS for interested people to subscribe, or even to use the feed to share via facebook, twitter or friendfeed automatically.

Let’s wait and see how my Picturetown is going to become in the next 2 years…

Do you agree with me?  So long as there’s involvement with human beings, there’s money involved directly or indirectly.

When I hear people saying that they think it is not ethical for religion leaders driving luxury cars just because their organizations are doing well, it makes me think one more time.  Directly or indirectly, this is still a business that they are doing afterall.  Profit or non-profit organization, they are still making money.  If they don’t make money, how are they going to survive?  Even if people are giving them free meals to eat, it comes with a cost too because people still has to buy the food (both cooked or uncooked).

It goes the same to the medical world too.  Just because you are a doctor who is able to heal people, will you still charge money to someone who has no money to give you?  You may not charge for the first few times.  You will still have to charge at the later stage.  Or else, you will be hungry!

With extra regards to the religions, I personally feel that it is absolutely ok to make a lot of money out of it.  That only means that the religion leader is capable and is worthy to be paid that sum of money for being able to group everybody to worship God.  Personally, I believe that God is here to make you rich, and not poor.  God is here to help us, and not leave us to struggle alone in this world.  Thank God!

So, do you agree with me that monetary transactions are involved between human beings in one way or another?  You may not be paying the money to that person, but to someone else.  Or, you may actually pay to that person.  Whichever way, you will find yourself opening up your wallet to pay money…

With that in mind, can you actually think of how people is willing to pay you money online now?
