My girlfriend sent a very meaningful email to me as well as her group of friends. It is an idea virus email which tells us a very simple story, yet it is telling us a very meaningful idea. It inspires me a lot when I read it. And I wonder who on earth actually thought of writing that. This person must be a genius in copywriting! And I must share with all of you about it because it is going to teach us something when we are all doing internet marketing.
Here’s how the story goes:
A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: ‘ I am blind, please help .’ There were only a few coins in the hat.
A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.
Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, ‘Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?’
The man said, ‘I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way..’
What he had written was: ‘ Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it. ‘
Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing?
Of course both signs told people the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?
Let me do some conclusion from this phrase.
With the same meaning in it, if you can involve the person logically or emotionally in one way or another, it will get a better effect! Just imagine telling everybody that you are blind, and you are begging for money – You make “begging income”.
However, if you write it in a way which makes a person think about how fortunate he is, you are making “sympathy income”.
In my opinion, there is a difference here. “Begging income” makes no difference from another person who is perfectly alright. People will only give you money because you are asking for it and they have some remaining cash to spare for you. However, “sympathy income” is a very different approach. It involves the buying signal from the people and they will look around for money to give you!
That’s a very different approach. Just some thoughts along the way. Let me know if it is useful to you.
