Do you entrust your social media marketing strategy to web agencies?

Over the period of working in client environment for almost two years, I have talked to several web agencies about their social media marketing strategies.  They are either inexperienced, or they are dependent on the Y-Gen employees for their natural experience with Facebook, small time blogs, Multiply, Twitter and so on.

I can still remember there’s one web agency which was pitching to me about their social media campaign with a particular company.  The campaign was doing really well, and I applause to their success.  After which, I asked them why they are not continuing with this project.  The reason he gives is that they have ended this campaign.  I was asking them why since this is a web campaign which can continue to be part of the whole strategy since it is already so well-received!  Such as transferring this success to another strategy?  Deeply inside, I guess that this campaign must be heavily dependent on the agency which is probably very costly to continue…

Ok, let’s begin with a few questions…

Does Twitter followers’ number count as part of their credibility?

There have been rumors around that the companies are choosing web agencies based on the number of their twitter followers.  First of all, I don’t think that should be used as a measurement to their success, but it does tell something about them.

Does portFolio count as part of their credibility?

Seriously speaking, I don’t think this should be counted.  That’s because when the client chooses their agency, they can only base their judgment on their clientele.  If not, they will show their portfolio.  However, that doesn’t really show much about their credibility.

A company’s portfolio is very dependent on their employees.  When the employee left the company, there goes their credibility.  But they do have a trail that they have done this portfolio.

The only credibility we can count on is the agency’s own social media strategy

I think the only way I can give credit to an agency is when they have such mechanism within the company or with its employees.  I will only want to use this company just because of that.  As such, I would say that Chris Brogan has won my trust because of the following:

  1. People are talking about him everywhere.
  2. He has all the numbers that you can refer to if you want to know.  His twitter counter. His blog subscribers. And so on.
  3. He has a lot of portfoliio anyway!
  4. He really blogs my language!
