It’s a dedication to participate in web communities

“I’m writing this post from my mobile phone while in the bus. I’m trying to test out my mobile application.”

Being part of a website community is a dedication by itself. Especially in the social media trend today, web 2.0 websites have become even more important than ever!

Joining the communities

For the past 2 years, i’ve attempted to commit myself into a few communities that i personally like to be involved in. Recently, I joined Problogger.com forum. On and off, i joined some facebook groups. Whenever i have internet access via my mobile phone or laptop, i am dedicating part of my time on twitter. This recently, i am also dedicating in commenting some of the blogs too.

My Discovery

I’ve come to learn that it is not easy to be dedicated in a few communities. It is a huge commitment to take, which may become a chore if i’m not interested. I am basically forcing myself to think of a comment when i don’t have any because i want to be visible in the eyes of social media.

Results of my dedication

It turned out that i got to know a couple of good online friends from overseas. In fact, my community that i’ve built over the years is basically from US, UK and Australia. Only recently, i started to see some Singaporeans joining me.

The results are pretty visible with the measurement of traffic, readers and the ability to engage with my online friends. Moreover, i’m glad that they have participated in my community because i know for myself that it’s a commitment to take which takes up part of their time as well. Really appreciated that! :)

What’s the purpose of having this community?

With the learning curve of building up a community, the experience is really priceless. It’s not something which can be learnt from textbook. It comes down to really being yourself in the real world, as well as in the online world.

It provides me the opportunity to get to know a lot more people. We’re all connected in this big big world! If there’s a day when we can meet up, there are bound to have common topics which we have already built online to talk about. That’s where a lot of people miss the picture of thinking that they should go for more networking sessions and for those quiet ones will tend to waste their time in the sessions.
