Social media has changed the rules of news broadcasting

by Charles on 28 July 2009

It used to be the days when companies only need to buy magazines, newspapers and watching television if there is any good or bad news talking about them and their competitors.

Unfortunately today, most Asian companies are still worrying only what appears in newspapers or on the evening news. Most of them are not even sure of what’s going on in the internet, and probably started to wonder why their business is going from bad to worse.

Even if companies decided to read from the internet, there are more than 110 million blogs, with over 1.6 million posts every day, and over 250 million pieces of tagged social media tracked by Technorati.

Companies need to equip themselves with the various social media tools to understand what the market is heading. On the internet, things can go really fast. I can still remember my wife sms me about the death of Michael Jackson on that very day and i saw twitter trend is following Michael Jackson already!

The internet news can go so fast that it maybe only newsworthy for that very hour! And when you missed it, you just can’t really find it unless you know what you don’t know, and start figuring it out through google.

To keep abreast of social media, we must first be savvy about it and habitually read about it through social media. It must be part of our daily activities or less we won’t know what’s happening. For example, did you know that Chris Pirillo tried to hit twitter trend with his influence as his birthday present? It really worked for a while! And when i check again the next day, the trend went to other keywords.

It’s almost impossible for newspaper to catch up with social media news. They can only capture glimpse of it and publish the old news in the end..

And the good news is that everyone of us are always learning something new about social media as we kept seeing new innovations coming out every now and then. Especially for Twitter applications and Facebook applications.

Let’s keep a look out and see how the world will evolve with the new rules that social media has set…

By the way, Asia will always be lagging behind in a wait-and-see mode even though we are able to access Internet faster and faster…
