When we are talking about a good web navigation, we are talking about the ease of use over here. Ease of use depends on how you look at things. A website with only one link is probably the best web navigation in the world. That’s because the visitor can easily identify what this website is all about and there is only one link to go to. But when it comes to multiple links, a lot of implications come into play.
A good web navigation is a website which shows up the links when you become aware of it. For example, if you are looking at my blog contents, you wouldn’t be noticing about who Charles is. However, when you decide to think who Charles really is, you will think of “About Charles Lau” on top. It’s that natural reaction when you want to look for something.
A good web navigation comes with three elements:
- The words that you use in the links
- How you place the links
- Where you place the links
The words that you use in the links
As you can see from my previous paragraph in this post, the words that you used must be easy to understand and thought about. Just think about this: When you need to look for a sitemap, you will think of “Sitemap” or “Archives”. It’s that natural thought that comes to you when you are looking for them.
How you place the links
The link can be very prominent like the main logo on every page. The link can be very small like a Delicious bookmark logo, so you will only look for that if you wish to socialbookmark this page. It can be very big. It can be very small. It can be in the form of words. It can also be in the form of picture. It is best to think of the nature of the link, before you decide on its form.
Where you place the links
If I decide to look for that particular link, and it is not where I expect it to be, I will start to do a little browse around the page to look for it. If it is not found still, it is considered a bad navigation. For example, a simple link to the main landing page is somehow not considered by many websites when we are actually looking for this word “Home” or the website’s main logo.
Hence, you can see that web navigation may sound really easy. It is sometimes a combination of art and science before you decide where, how and what to put the link. Do consider over it.
