I have been an Internet reviewer, reviewing websites since June 2007.

Social media has been a phenomenon since 2007. It brings in the true two-way communication between the websites and their visitors. That's what Web 2.0 is all about. I aim to review what the world has become, and to give you my opinions and choices.

Michael Jackson flooded the Internet!

By Charles On June 28, 2009 No Comments

I can still remember watching Michael Jackson’s music  videos when I was still very young.

This video is so nostalgic…

The news about Michael Jackson have hit the Internet so hard as the world is updating the Internet about Michael Jackson all over the place.  People are updating about Michael Jackson, while others are busy reading about them.  Twitter, Wikipedia and blogs are talking about him all over the Internet!

More effort should be placed to digitize paperwork

By Charles On April 5, 2009 No Comments

When I receive a package from a company via registered mail, they still wanted me to mail them back an acknowledgement receipt so that my password will be  activated for me to access their website.

I was thinking again… Can I just activate my password via their website then?

With the use of the Internet with more and more usage of advanced computers, more and more companies are already cutting down on printing papers for their paperwork.  We can use computers more efficiently since the Internet has connected all our computers together.  Paperwork can be authorized through the Internet.  Fraud can always be there whether you are using computer or paperwork.  It’s all about the effort to make things easier and faster.

3291841163 661f634ba4 m More effort should be placed to digitize paperwork

Even though I do hear this word “environmental friendly” many times everywhere, there are still a lot of places where papers are more preferred, such as the following:

1) photographs versus digital pictures
2) book organizer versus personal digital assistant (PDA)
3) “signing on contracts” versus “clicking on a button to agree on the website”
4) fax versus email
5) book versus ebook
6) “reading from the monitor”  versus “printing out and read”

I’m actually glad to see the new generations are now moving into digital world where there’s no need to print it out and read.  All the information can just be stored in a hard disk, instead of carrying heavy books around.  Just hope to see more efforts done…

Nikon has launched “Care To Give” charity campaign

By Charles On April 4, 2009 No Comments

Nikon - Care to giveIt’s a charity campaign by Nikon Singapore for  the Singapore Children’s Society, which takes place from now till May 2009.

What’s Care To Give?

It’s an online campaign aimed at helping underprivileged children in Singapore, and a genuine attempt by Nikon to give back something more to society. The elected charity will be the Singapore Children’s Society. For every new person who signs-up for an account at www.myPicturetown.com through the “Care To Give” portal, Nikon will donate $1 to the Singapore Children’s Society.

Who is Singapore Children’s Society?

Singapore Children’s Society aims to bring relief and happiness to children in need.  They want to be a leading edge organisation in promoting the well-being of the child.

They help protect and nurture children and youth of all races and religions, especially those who are abused, neglected, and/or from dysfunctional families via the  following six service categories:

1) Care Giving:  They take care of children and youth on behalf of their parents/ guardians for a period of time

2) Preventive:  They help prevent children and youth from being harmed or becoming at risk of delinquency, abuse and/or neglect.

3) Developmental:  They help educate and develop children and youth to become healthy and well rounded.

4) Remedial:  They provide rehabilitative services and medical subsidies to children and youth, with guidance and counseling for their families.

5) Community:  They promote the welfare of children and youth through the fostering of happy family life.

6) Public Education:  They conduct research related to children, youth and family to raise public awareness.

Nikon founded my Picturetown

By donating $1 for every sign-up in my Picturetown, Nikon not only hopes to increase their number of subscribers, but also to raises awareness of the Singapore Children’s  Society.

It looks to me that my  Picturetown has just launched not long ago, and Nikon is working hard to get it into the Web 2.0 world.

When I subscribe and have a look at the interface, I was  wondering what this website differs from its competitors.  I started to upload a photo.

Here’s how  it looks like when I am uploading:

my Picturetown

This is how the photo will be displayed.

Uploaded a photo at my picturetown

Photos are shared via email in their interface.

Share photo from my picturetown

Some of the other features such as adding to an album.   And they are also supporting third party sites and applications which connect to my Picturetown.

Conclusion

Personally, I find it meaningful that Nikon is using the money to donate to charity while attempting to increase their market share in the photo sharing industry.  It is definitely a win-win situation here, while the money will be used for charity and Nikon can increase their number of sign-ups in their photo sharing portal.

There are two things to note in this blog post.  One is the charity campaign which Nikon is working on to increase the awareness of the Singapore Children’s Society.  Another is to work on increasing their number of subscribers in my Picturetown.

1) Singapore Children’s Society reaches out to about 15,000 children, youths and families in need through their 9 service centres.  They proactively ensures that they are at the forefront to serve the needs of the children.  It is managed by an elected executive committee, who are volunteers and come from diverse backgrounds such as education, law, healthcare, business and more. It employs about 120 staff. They were awarded with two major Awards (Asia Pacic NGO Award and NVPC Best Non-Profit Organisation Award) in 2004.

2) my Picturetown has a similar characteristic as twitter here.  Twitter provides the very basic feature which is the engine that allows tweeters like us to broadcast our voices.  There are so many twitter applications out there which are supporting this, extending to many meaningful features out of it!  As for my Picturetown, it is currently providing a tool for us to upload and to share via email and static urls to share on social networks.  I don’t see any web badges for us bloggers to put up, or any RSS for interested people to subscribe, or even to use the feed to share via facebook, twitter or friendfeed automatically.

Let’s wait and see how my Picturetown is going to become in the next 2 years… :)

Have a look at their website at www.nikon-caretogive.com.

Anything to do with human beings comes with a cost of money

By Charles On April 3, 2009 No Comments

2418695 3600b4cab5 Anything to do with human beings comes with a cost of money

Do you agree with me?  So long as there’s involvement with human beings, there’s money involved directly or indirectly.

When I hear people saying that they think it is not ethical for religion leaders driving luxury cars just because their organizations are doing well, it makes me think one more time.  Directly or indirectly, this is still a business that they are doing afterall.  Profit or non-profit organization, they are still making money.  If they don’t make money, how are they going to survive?  Even if people are giving them free meals to eat, it comes with a cost too because people still has to buy the food (both cooked or uncooked).

It goes the same to the medical world too.  Just because you are a doctor who is able to heal people, will you still charge money to someone who has no money to give you?  You may not charge for the first few times.  You will still have to charge at the later stage.  Or else, you will be hungry!

With extra regards to the religions, I personally feel that it is absolutely ok to make a lot of money out of it.  That only means that the religion leader is capable and is worthy to be paid that sum of money for being able to group everybody to worship God.  Personally, I believe that God is here to make you rich, and not poor.  God is here to help us, and not leave us to struggle alone in this world. :)  Thank God!

So, do you agree with me that monetary transactions are involved between human beings in one way or another?  You may not be paying the money to that person, but to someone else.  Or, you may actually pay to that person.  Whichever way, you will find yourself opening up your wallet to pay money…

With that in mind, can you actually think of how people is willing to pay you money online now?

Man’s Worry Verus Woman’s Worry

By Charles On October 14, 2007 No Comments

Before marriage, women always worry about the man they are going to be with. Hence their mentality is always on the lookout and also worrying if their current relationship is going to work or not because they treated marriage as a life-and-death pact in their lives. But for men, they somehow treat marriage as the next thing to do with the woman they are with because men always seem very optimistic with the marriage that they are going to be with. And if men don’t really wish to get married, that’s only because they have not really found a girlfriend they want to be with.

Woman’s Secret
Allow me to reveal the secret of woman that they are actually very emotional. Sounds common? Let’s hear more about it. When it comes to relationship, women may accept the relationship proposal from the guys when they found some feeling with the men. But along the way, when they found a guy who treats them especially well, they will simply open their heart for it even though they already have a relationship… Sounds like a betrayal? That’s only because they are being emotional about it… While you might not be treating your girlfriend well, there might have some other guys out there trying to treat her very well. And that will just sparkle the emotional thought inside her whether she has fallen in love with a new guy…

Woman’s thought about marriage
Women might have a lot of hurting relationships in the past… And that contributes a lot to their defensiveness towards a good marriage. They are always in the discussion mode… No conclusion… That’s why, they are especially careful when it comes to marriage.. Even though deep inside their hearts, they really wanted to get married with the man who loves them a lot…

How About The Guys
Guys are pretty straightforward in what they are doing. They will usually treat marriage as though it’s part of their big plan. When the guys tell the girls something, they have already gone through a lot of thoughts before letting the girl know… But the girls are telling as they are thinking… And hence, they are really emotional when it comes to making a complete decision… They are best known to be fickle-minded when it comes to making a decision… The guys are pretty straightforward in their decisions…

When it comes to worry
Guys’ worry usually happen only after marriage… That’s when they start to get really matured in what they are thinking… And to really plan for the future! But girls start to worry everything while the marriage is not over… And when the marriage is done, the girls will start to stay faithful without any other thoughts while the guys seem to think of marriage as a kind of “funeral” of love…

While I don’t have that experience of being married, I do think that marriage is something very joyous… and being married makes me want to settle down and start my own new family with children…

And because girls usually think so much before marriage (just in case they married the wrong guy), they would usually think of the idea about guys turning their hearts after marriage… They are simply a worry machine before marriage while the guys will become worry machines themselves after marriage! How ironical…

Why Some Singaporeans Seem To Be Lack Of Creativity?

By Charles On October 11, 2007 No Comments

We seem to be living in an environment where making mistake is a “crime”. If you make a mistake, you will tend to be “punished” in one way or another. We are differentiated from our different scores in schools which somehow determine our position. If you score high in school, you will be rewarded. And if you fail, you will probably be barred from studying on those certain subjects. Though such education system is possibly common worldwide, Singapore is a place which holds education more than anything since human is our only natural resource in Singapore.

Copycats
In the end, we will start to see copycats in Singapore. There are exceptionally more copycats in the working world because of the fear of being looked down. For the pride’s sake, a person will just copy other people’s work to have a “look good” feel. We have to break through this problem… That’s because we tend to be lagged behind in the trend from other countries. We tend to copy what other countries are doing, and make it our own in Singapore. Singapore’s creativity is probably quite limited.

Is this Singapore Style of Doing Business?
When I see one shop doing exceptionally well, I will start to see some shops popping up doing the same thing exactly! I am not sure if this is the same with other countries. But re-inventing the wheels may not be Singaporeans’ cup of tea. They like to work on what’s working for them, rather than to rack their brain for a new idea. On the surface, they may say that they want to work on fresh ideas only… However, that’s probably what 20% are doing, and the remaining 80% are just copying them.

When one sells bubble tea, all sells bubble tea.

When one sells roti bun, all sells all sorts of variants of the roti bun.

When one sells katong laksa, there are so many katong laksa everywhere.

When I started a certain temporary business for fun, I start to see copycats coming up.

Can such a person succeed online?
Even for my video review (which I don’t find it fresh anymore), I start to see Alex doing exactly the same video review like myself in his OnlineMarketingSingapore.com. Just take a look at his video review over here. Just by listening to his video review, I realize I really need to brush up my ascent to be more internationally recognized… Moreover, I don’t understand why Camtasia is loading so long… Is that what the Camtasia can do for us? I believe Camtasia is a much better software since it costs a few hundred dollars more than my HyperCam software… I think everybody has the opportunity to do video reviews on blogs.

Moreover, in my opinion, I guess somebody (I didn’t say who he is…) will have a hard time getting some page ranking because many articles he had blogged have multiple duplications everywhere in Google indexes. This not only shortcuts his learning curve, he wouldn’t be able to learn as much as other bloggers who wrote their own contents from their own thoughts. Google don’t like duplicated articles… “Good luck to your blog! Mr A!”

Blog contents differ from article websites
Blogging is a way of expressing one person’s thought… It depicts upon aristocracy when it comes to term with blogging in his own world. Democracy might not work in blogging since it can only contain feedbacks in comments which can be deleted at the hands of the aristocrat. And that is why every blog content is unique by itself no matter how you see it. When one big news happens, many bloggers will have different point of views about that same topic. That’s what blog is all about in the first place.

Thank God that we have Singapore government taking steps to increase the creativity right from the young ages… I hope it helps to change now…

Some Ignorant Customers Telling Silly Things To Web Companies

By Charles On October 8, 2007 No Comments

Have you ever encountered people asking you to do a website whereby they say “I just want to have a simple to use website.” when you were trying to explain some user-interface problems you are facing which you need some input from the people? You might say “Dear customer, I am facing some interface problem with your requirement. Can I ask you how you would want the work done?”. And your customer might reply “You just go by your instinct. Just make sure it is simple to understand, and a user knows how to use without much explanation.”. Is this as good as not telling us anything?

This can be a problem of communication breakdown between the website companies and their customers. This is usually the case of over-relying on the good background of the company and caused problem at a much later stage. I am not saying that relying on the company isn’t good. It’s more like getting yourself involved a little to make sure the company is doing the right way that you wanted.

And because of the requirement might not be what they wanted, there usually would be case of re-doing a certain module of the program. And that’s where the companies have to charge for extra time and yet the clients complain for incorrect requirement. The rule of thumb is that “Customer is always right” and hence, the best case is still to bomb the customers till you got it right before you move on to it.

Probably some companies just accept things as they are (even though it might not be exactly what they want), and get things over so that they can move on with further things. These are the 20% of the clients who are willing to pay big money and are less cost to maintain. The 80% are the ones I mentioned above who are so troublesome and yet they are paying low price.

I remember some marketing expert mentioned that “Focus on 20% of your clients, and give away 80% to your competitors.”. This can be so true when you are handling the complaints from your 80% who can be so cheapo in the things that they want and yet keep on insisting on getting the best things.
