Singapore has a lot of food varieties. We are fortunate enough to eat food cooked by different races just because we are in a multi-racial country. By the way, because of multi-racial culture, we naturally have to speak in English as our first language or else we will have difficulty communicating with one another.
Today, I had skipped my lunch due to my sales appointment. And naturally speaking, I would be so hungry that any kind of normal food should taste equally nice. But not with this Express Teppan - Yaki. I had my first round of their food before back in early 2007. The food still tasted quite ok. But today’s food is simply below average.
Right in front of the person doing public cooking, they sticked a “Big Value Meal at $7.50″. That attracted me for a while since I get to eat teppanyaki at $7.50. When I asked for the food menu, I was shocked to see only mushroom meal is $7.50. All the rest’s average price is about $10.50. (Every price here is in Singapore dollar.)
Basically, their food menu is as follows:
- Teppan-Yaki Beef with Chilli and Garlic
- Teppan Yaki Lamb with Chilli and Garlic
- Teppan-Yaki Pork with Chilli and Garlic
- Teppan-Yaki Mushroom Set
- Teppan-Yaki Squid with Garlic
- Teppan-Yaki Prawn with Garlic
- Teppan-Yaki Oyster Sauteed with Garlic
- Teppan-Yaki Pepper Pork Chop
- Teppan-Yaki Sirloin Steak
- Teppan-Yaki Scallop with Garlic
- Teppan-Yaki Chicken Drumstick
- Teppan-Yaki Prawns
- Teppan-Yaki Fish Fillet
- Teppan-Yaki Steak (Tenderloin)
The receipt looks like this:

This is how it looks like having a chef cooking right in front of you.

All our food are placed on a piece of aluminium foil, and there seems to have heat below to keep it cooking. Right at the below is the squid. The squid is still ok, but the overall dish is quite plain and tasteless.

Here’s my chicken drumstick version. It is also quite tasteless too. I wonder if the chef is tired to cook or not.

So I asked for more chilli to liven up the taste. The original taste is not good.

Oh yes, Charles Lau loves chilli! Loves the hot hot chilli to put together with the food. It is quite common to like hot and spicy food in Singapore.
I would give an overall rating of 30% for this food experience at Express Teppan - Yaki (Restaurant) from Food Republic at Wisma Atria.
Here’s the video I took.
