The Perfect Scenario
It can be so hilarious to discover that many of us are falling into this “perfect scenario” for at least one time in our lives. We thought life is so “perfect” that if there is a rule or something, we will be able to follow it and lead a happy life ever after. In fact, I know of one friend who actually knows that she can’t follow her time table if she ever starts one. And when I asked her how she is going to do for her future, she is almost lost of words… In fact, she has gotten used that she will just do whatever she wants at her current situation, and forgets about the big picture so that she can move on because she knows that she cannot follow the rules of her own schedules! It seems so difficult to do it after all…
The Problem
Let’s take a quick look why this “perfect scenario” can never work for human beings. Have you heard any of the following:
- “Oh you are such a perfectionist!”
- “To err is human.”
- “I shall learn from my mistakes.”
- “You have to start at least three companies in order to be successful. Well now, you have two more to go!”
- “I must score perfect in this exam!” (Sometimes can only score 95/100)
Human beings have been engineered to be very good in one area in their lives, and probably very bad in many other areas. (That sounds really bad!) But the good news is that we are able to do so much more things for being imperfect! We can outsource out most of our work and things to the people who are really good at it. Even it is so, we could also make mistakes in that very good specialty of ours.
The Solution
- Do you know that you can be very good in something when you focus? Just think about it.
- When we focus on one thing for 24 hours, that one thing is being magnified into many sub-categories. And we will also look into the sub-categories and work them out. Just imagine this Charles Lau dot Com has how many tasks I have to work on… (Daily blogging, doing video reviews of software and websites, replying emails and comments, marketing this blog, analyzing this blog and thinking of ideas to make this blog well-known.)
- And when we focus on three things for 24 hours, those three things will still be treated as three big categories to work on. And we will have problem working deeper into each thing itself because by the time we start to learn something deeper, we are going to sleep already… And on the next day, we might have to focus on second thing and forget about the depth you have gone through with the first thing!
- Stop buying too many solutions (probably in the form of ebooks) to start your business online! Just look through the many landing pages with sales pitches out there, and decide which solution you would want to adopt and stick to it till you squeeze every marketing juice out of it.
- Focus on one business at a time. Don’t do too many businesses altogether or you will fall into the many categories which cannot be broken down into sub-categories (See Point 1.1 and 1.2 of this paragraph.)
- When you focus on one thing, make sure you are able to break down into even smaller categories until you can’t break anymore and keep working on the most basic sub-category all the way up to the main category.
Conclusion
Hope you like this post also! Just a thought when I bought an ebook recently as I have faced problems of handling too many physical businesses back in 2004…
