• Who is Charles?

I have been an Internet reviewer, reviewing websites since June 2007.

Social media has been a phenomenon since 2007. It brings in the true two-way communication between the websites and their visitors. That's what Web 2.0 is all about. I aim to review what the world has become, and to give you my opinions and choices.

  • Want to be reviewed?

Over at my blog, I review you at no cost. But I will not be obliged to write reviews about your website, nor will I be obliged to write reviews positively. It is purely from my own point of view. There will have no deadline for me to finish any reviews if I am going to take up.

Please prepare your product ready for me before contacting me. Thanks. :)

Part 2: Your Name Appearing On Top Search Result

By Charles On August 9, 2007 Under Online Marketing

I was seeing one reader clicking on “Write More” comment for the previous post, and I thought it would be good to talk more about this topic. In my venture to start this online business, I realize something very important. “I am just a nobody who wants to market my name to become a somebody!” I have been doing business for quite some time already… Having to market my past businesses since 2003, I can feel the importance of marketing at the start of my online venture… Especially Internet which even has its own term “Internet Marketing”. Doing sales is as important, but it is nothing if the marketing plan is not done properly…

Any Name Will Work!
Actually, any brand name that you call will work… It is how you associate your products with your brand name that is more important… If you have associated it with total success, you can’t even pull that name out when you wanted it to! For example, we know of this brand “Triumph” which is strongly associated with women’s wear… I remember they had tried to market men’s wear one day… And the sales were bad! Reports saying that guys don’t like to wear a brand which is too feminine!

The Formula To Make A Name To Work!

  1. Just put any name in front of everybody, and put any product (or even just some tag line) that you want to associate side by side, you are almost half way there!
  2. Make sure everybody gets to see that name and its association for at least six times!
  3. You are done!

How much more complication do you want? It is just like that!

Marketing With Your Name

  • Marketing your name in a blog could lead to a serious “problem”… If you dedicate too much on a certain topic and become a “specialist” in that particular niche under your name, you have effectively told everybody that you are that topic! My friend – Christian – told me about focusing myself on a niche is very important. I thought so myself. However, I am marketing my name over here…
  • Just imagine one of my favourite blogs “http://www.dailywebideas.com/” was previously known as “http://www.janemayblogs.com“… Jane May is a successful blog expert who teaches people how to blog… However, she decided to change her blog domain name to “Daily Web Ideas” from “Jane May Blogs”… Probably she found that this domain name is not effective enough to market the brand that she always wanted to let the world know… But I wonder if she realized that she has effectively put her name side by side with the invisible brand “blog expert” of herself… And because of her realization to change her branding, she has to inform everybody of her change of domain, hence all her linkbacks from external websites are affected drastically. (Luckily, Google implemented this thing called 301 Redirect… But I still don’t see her page ranks being transferred.)Take a look here of how many links are linking to http://www.janemayblogs.com : About 195 LinkBacks

Take a look here of how many links are linking to http://www.dailywebideas.com : Zero LinkBacks

Google Has Been Very Fair With Their Search Results
While my page rank is zero right now, Google has ranked my name “Charles Lau” on top of the next domain name which has a page rank of 3. Hence, you can see that it is not just about the page rank that makes your website a better position, it is just about the relevancy of this name that people are searching for… I am glad that there is no superstar with this name… Lucky me…

Problem With My Name Domain Affecting My Concentration

  • The problem with using my name as my blog domain is that I am going to brand my name side by side with a specialty that I am going to let the world know. I tried to brand myself as “Make Money Online” at first, and I start to think I seem to be quite limited with my posts about this topic…
  • I attempted to blog something more about what I like, rather than to focus on any niche that Christian has been advising me. Then, I am finally relieved to see Sunny mentioning about “Don’t Target Niche Markets, Just Focus on your Blog’s Topic“… But my blog topic will be all talking about myself because that is how I branded it as.
  • I took a quick look at the many different blogs who also used their names as their blogs. Basically, they are all talking about their lives, philosophy, careers and interests… And while they were talking about these, they have somehow got branded for a certain niche that everybody goes for. People go for Joel Comm for Web Advertising… John Chow for Making Money using Blogs… Matt Cutts for working in Google… Though they are simply a “brand” of themselves everywhere they go, their blog is not so much focused on a niche that they are talking about… Of course, I don’t say everybody does that… An exception is Carl who is focusing his Make-Money-Online blog as much as 90% on his theme, probably because he really wants everybody know about this topic more than anything else.
  • Eventually after I have been blogging a while, my niche is with my business thoughts and that I started to apply my thoughts into action… through all the video reviews I have made… through trying different blog themes and advertisements… And all my other online ventures I am working on as well…

Associating My Name

  • Having my name on the top search engine is just a strategy… It doesn’t tell the audience to search for that name if they don’t know me… So I have to start doing my name association accordingly.
  • In fact, I have been thinking about my name association since last month while keeping up with my blog posts to keep this blog alive… I have thought of putting in this brand “C.O.R.E.” as an association with my blog. Where you will start to ask what that means… Well my friend it is “Charles Online Review Element”…
  • You might ask what this means… Generally speaking, I like to review about business… And there are way so many domain names out there for me to review… So I start to associate this word “Charles Online Review” everywhere I comment… And the word “Element” is this blog where the readers will start to see the fruits of my lessons…
  • You may be asking yourself “What is Charles Online Review Element” when you first visited my blog. Well, that is the first time you are seeing my brand association… Today in this blog post, you are seeing the second time… I still got four more times to let you see before you start to associate me with this brand I am portraying… :)

Marketing My Name
A blog with top search result and a good association, is nothing if nobody knows about it. That is why it is so important to let the whole world know about my name someway somehow… Here are the many ways people start to know about my presence online with my domain name:

  1. Writing good contents on my blog: It attracts people who are searching for that particular keyword and got onto my page. This is a natural search but it contributes about 40% of my traffic in this blog which is very powerful for a 3 month old…
  2. Commenting on other people’s blog which are of your interest: If they wrote something that you are interested in, definitely you will start to talk a lot about it in their comments. Giving yourself a presence in the traffic of those blogs that you are participating. It takes two hands to clap… Hence once you are attracting traffic from that blog, you are also attracting the blogger himself too… You will start to build bonds with fellow bloggers everywhere!
  3. Thinking of an idea to give something free to the bloggers. Believe it or not, in this world what goes around comes around… What you give, will come back eventually through that same person or another… In my case, I give video reviews to the bloggers who offer link partnerships… In my case, I give review to that blog so I have to link them to show my readers their presence… While in their case, they will provide any relevant reason for giving that link to me too…
  4. Giving Product Video Reviews of different affiliated software… Giving video reviews of different websites… It is exposing myself in the YouTube search engine as well…
  5. Keep writing topics on keywords which search engines have acknowledged… Sometimes, they might send traffic to my site with those keywords because I happened to write about that something… Hence, I will start to write more about it to give more relevant results for that keyword for the next wave of traffic!
  6. And many more to come in my business planning… I will show you one by one in the near future which I am still researching and trying it out…

Conclusion
I think I might just write on and on which can get myself out of this topic already… So, I decided to stop and see what other things I can write about… If you are able to read till this end, you must be really interested about this article… Do give me some comments to improve and let me know what other things I can write about if there is any… Thank you… :)
