It’s never easy to change anybody. So I change myself.
Over the years working with different business partners, colleagues and others, I adopted the idea of changing myself first so as to adapt to other people’s mindset while achieving my objectives. This way, I can get things going much faster than spending time trying to convince a whole new idea to other people.
I will only spend time to convince when change is really necessary to other people. Trust me that it is very torturous.
I have this mindset because I have come to understand that everybody is unique and has their own set of beliefs that they have established over the years. And when communication is necessary, it has to take everybody’s unique beliefs into consideration. Hence, I start by asking for opinions before making mine. In other words, I basically don’t have my own opinions. My opinions make up of many people’s opinions to get things going.
However, time also plays a part to achieve my objectives. When opportunity knocks, I will make full use of it by riding on it with my pending idea. Patience plays a big role in this.
How about those whom I can’t convince? I will either try to derive a win-win situation with them, or to go through the same motion with them regardless of me knowing that it may not work for me because it could be working for them since they have the conviction about it.
Of course, there are times that I have to give up if I sense any foul in this, causing a one-sided/win-lose situation. If everybody plays fair, let’s have fun together.
