Last Wednesday, I just had the opportunity to teach about social media marketing to a group of about 20 people. The experience was really great for myself and my recipients (I believe…) as we have built a synergy to work towards a better social media team.
Before I conduct the training,
- I think about who my target audience is: They are from different levels – from the higher management to the actual ground operations.
- Next, I wondered about the kind of materials I should provide.
- Lastly, I thought about the main takeaways they can get after the training.
I had been brooding over the above 3 things for a long period of time while gathering as much useful information online as I could. It reminds me of this:
I could still remember quite a few years ago, I have been thinking about the kind of social media marketing class a teacher can give because I find that it is all about being social and personalised. On top of that, I believe everyone of us has an idea of what social media should be about since many of us have been posting and seeing what others have been doing on social media.
But in the process of working on the materials and after the class, I have come to realise that this idea doesn’t work well in a MNC because of the differences between MNC and SME working environment. There is a need to look at how an MNC works on social media. On top of that, there are just too much information out there that somebody has to put some of the best practices together. On the other hand, being personalised on social media may be easier for small businesses as they are lean and thus nimble to personalise.
I have been part of the administrator teams in all sorts of professional and personal social media accounts, totally over half a million fans. Today, I find that we have to see our social media assets from a different perspective that allows us to build an even better relationship with our fans, and eventually to bring that real value out of it. This class is not only helping my recipients in understanding why and how to achieve them, it also reinforces my knowledge and experiences from their feedback so that we can work more effectively towards our social media goals together!
